What is depression?

Depression is known to cause persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and disinterest in activities that you once enjoyed. It goes beyond mere feelings of sadness and can significantly impact your daily functioning, relationships, and overall well-being.

Depression can manifest in various ways, ranging from mild to severe symptoms, and can occur in episodes or persist chronically over time.

What causes depression?

The causes of depression can vary from person to person. Some common reasons you can  suffer from depression may include:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Brain chemistry imbalances
  • Traumatic life events (i.e., loss or abuse)
  • Chronic stress
  • Certain medical conditions
  • Substance misuse

Social and environmental factors like loneliness, financial difficulties, and lack of social support can also play a significant role in the development of depression.

Are there different levels of depression?

Depression isn’t a one-size-fits-all condition and can have different levels of severity.

Various types include major depressive disorder (MDD), persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), bipolar disorder, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and postpartum depression, among others.

Symptoms of depression can range from mild (manageable and not significantly impairing daily function) to severe (debilitating and possibly leading to thoughts of self-harm or suicide).

How is depression treated?

The Evolve Behavioral Health team treats depression with evidence-based solutions. Treatment typically involves a combination of psychotherapy, medication, lifestyle changes, and support from loved ones.

Psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or interpersonal therapy (IPT), helps you identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to your depression. Medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) may be prescribed to help rebalance brain chemistry and alleviate symptoms.

In addition to therapy and medication, lifestyle changes like regular exercise, healthy eating habits, adequate sleep, and stress management techniques can also help you manage or overcome depression. Building a strong support network of friends, family, or support groups can provide emotional support and encouragement during difficult times, too.
