What is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that typically manifests in childhood and often persists into adulthood. It’s characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning and development.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

Symptoms of ADHD are typically categorized into two main types:

Inattention

Inattentive symptoms include difficulty sustaining attention, frequent careless mistakes, trouble organizing tasks, forgetfulness, and being easily distracted.

Hyperactivity/impulsivity

Hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms involve fidgeting, excessive talking, difficulty waiting for one's turn, interrupting others, and constant need for movement.

What causes ADHD?

The exact cause of ADHD isn’t fully understood, but it’s believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors.

Research suggests that genes play a significant role in predisposing you to ADHD, as it tends to run in families. In addition, certain environmental factors like exposure to toxins during pregnancy, premature birth, low birth weight, and maternal smoking may increase the risk of developing ADHD.

Also, abnormalities in the structure and function of certain areas of your brain that affect attention, impulse control, and executive functioning may cause ADHD.

How is ADHD treated?

The Evolve Behavioral Health team tailors treatment to your specific needs and symptoms. Medication, such as stimulants or nonstimulants, is often prescribed.

Stimulant medications work by increasing levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in your brain, which can improve attention, impulse control, and hyperactivity. Nonstimulant medications may be preferred if you don’t respond well to stimulants or experience significant side effects.

In addition to medication, behavioral therapy, and psychosocial interventions are commonly used to teach coping strategies and organizational skills. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can help address thought patterns and behaviors associated with ADHD, while parent-training programs can provide caregivers with strategies for managing their child's behavior effectively.

Classroom accommodations, such as extended time on tests, preferential seating, and frequent breaks, can also be helpful for children with ADHD.

You can rely on your provider to give guidance on how to help manage symptoms of ADHD.
