What is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by a traumatic event. Mostly known for its association with military combat, PTSD can stem from various traumatic experiences, such as:

  • Accidents
  • Natural disasters
  • Physical or sexual assault
  • Witnessing violence

PTSD can cause you to experience persistent and distressing symptoms that interfere with your daily function and quality of life.

What are the symptoms of PTSD?

Symptoms of PTSD are generally categorized into four main groups:

Intrusive memories

This includes recurrent, involuntary memories of the traumatic event, distressing dreams related to the event, flashbacks where you feel like you’re reliving the experience, and severe emotional distress or physical reactions triggered by reminders of the trauma.

Avoidance

PTSD may cause you to avoid thoughts, feelings, or conversations associated with the traumatic event. You might also avoid places, people, or activities that remind you of the trauma.

Negative changes in thinking and mood

This involves:

  • Negative thoughts about yourself or the world
  • Distorted beliefs about the trauma
  • Feelings of detachment or estrangement from others
  • Persistent negative emotions like fear, guilt, or shame
  • Lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities

Changes in arousal and reactivity

PTSD may cause you to avoid thoughts, feelings, or conversations associated with the traumatic event. You might also avoid places, people, or activities that remind you of the trauma.

How is PTSD diagnosed?

To diagnose PTSD, your Evolve Behavioral Health professional performs a thorough assessment. They learn about your symptoms, medical history, and any potential traumatic experiences.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) outlines specific criteria that must be met for a diagnosis of PTSD.

How is PTSD treated?

At Evolve Behavioral Health, treatment may involve a combination of psychotherapy, medication, and support from loved ones. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), particularly a type called exposure therapy, is commonly used to help you confront and process traumatic memories. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is another therapy approach that’s shown effectiveness in treating PTSD.

Your provider may also prescribe medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) to help alleviate symptoms such as depression, anxiety, or insomnia. The team also encourages support groups and peer counseling.

If you’re struggling with PTSD, early intervention and comprehensive treatment can significantly improve your prognosis and help you regain control over your life.

If you have symptoms of PTSD, call today or book a visit online.
